Vastu Shastra
Vastu is the Indian science of spatial harmony — the placement of rooms, doors, and objects relative to the eight directions and the five elements they govern. Read the table for the ideal use of each direction; the quick fixes at the bottom apply to almost every home.
North-East (Ishaan)

Remedy: Keep light, clean and minimally furnished. Place a copper vessel of water; never block this corner.
East (Purva)
Air · Indra- Main entrance

- Heavy almirahs
Remedy: Ensure morning light reaches this side. Pranam to the rising sun.
South-East (Agneya)
Fire · Agni- Kitchen
- Electrical / inverter room
- Pooja room
- Bedroom for the head of family
- Water tanks
Remedy: Cook facing east. Keep the gas stove in the south-east of the kitchen itself.
South (Dakshina)
Earth · Yama- Master bedroom (head pointing south while sleeping)
- Heavy storage
- Main entrance
- Children's bedroom
Remedy: Use earthy colours. Avoid mirrors that reflect the bed.
South-West (Nairutya)
Earth · Nairuti- Master bedroom
- Heavy furniture
- Wealth almirah
- Toilets / drains
- Open spaces
- Kitchen
Remedy: This must be the heaviest, most grounded zone. Never leave it empty.
West (Paschim)
Water (subtle) · Varuna- Dining room
- Children's bedroom (older kids)
- Toilets if unavoidable
- Pooja room
Remedy: Allow afternoon sun entry. Good for evening / family activities.
North-West (Vayavya)
Air · Vayu- Guest bedroom
- Toilet (if not in SE/NE)
- Daughter's room before marriage
- Main bedroom
- Mandir
- Kitchen
Remedy: Helps movement / change — appropriate for transient occupants.
North (Uttara)
Water · Kubera- Office
- Cash locker (facing north when opened)
- Career altar
- Toilets
- Heavy furniture along the wall
Remedy: Keep clean and minimally obstructed — Kubera enters here.
Quick fixes that apply to most homes
- Sleep with head pointing south or east, never north.
- Keep the puja room in the north-east; face east while praying.
- The kitchen stove belongs in the south-east; cook facing east.
- Main entrance ideally in north, east, or north-east.
- Don't keep broken clocks, mirrors, or furniture — repair or remove.
- Money locker against the south or south-west wall, opening north.
- Avoid keeping shoes near the entrance inside the house.
- Plant tulsi in the north or north-east of the property.
