Ekadashi — एकादशी

Vishnu

11th tithi vrat for Vishnu. Most observed fasting day; falls twice a month.

Ekadashi Vrat Katha (general). Of the demon Murasura who took refuge in the body of those who ate on Ekadashi, and the goddess Ekadashi who emerged from Vishnu's body to slay him. Fasting on this day starves the demon and earns Vishnu's grace. Each of the 24 Ekadashis in the year has its own katha — Putrada, Vaikuntha, Mokshada, Saphala, and so on — but all share this opening.

Pradosh — प्रदोष

Shiva

13th tithi vrat for Shiva. Worship from sunset until 3 hours after.

Pradosh Vrat Katha. Of the poor Brahmin's wife who, after losing everything, observed the Pradosh vrat with great devotion. Shiva, pleased, restored her husband's fortune and granted them a son who later became a king. Worship at twilight (sandhya) is the heart of the vrat.

Purnima (Pournami) — पूर्णिमा

Universal

Full moon. Satyanarayan katha is the universal household vrat.

Satyanarayan Katha. Five chapters told to Narada by Vishnu himself. The vrat removes obstacles, restores fortune, and grants the desired outcome. Read on any Purnima or important household milestone (housewarming, marriage, naming).

Amavasya — अमावस्या

Pitrus

New moon. Offerings to ancestors (tarpan, shraddha).

Sankashti Chaturthi — संकष्टी चतुर्थी

Ganesha

4th tithi krishna paksha. Fast until moonrise; major Ganesh vrat.

Sankashti Chaturthi Katha. Ganesha, called Sankatahara (remover of distress), is invoked on this day. The katha tells of King Harishchandra who, despite all losses, kept his vrat and was restored. Fasting continues until moonrise, when arghya is offered to the moon and Ganesha.

Vinayaka Chaturthi — विनायक चतुर्थी

4th tithi shukla paksha. Ganesh vrat; precursor of Ganesh Chaturthi in Bhadrapada.

Masik Shivratri — मासिक शिवरात्रि

Shiva

14th tithi krishna paksha. The Phalguna instance is Maha Shivratri.

Shivratri Katha. Of the hunter who, hiding from a tiger in a bilva tree on the night of Phalguna Krishna 14, unknowingly dropped bilva leaves on a Shiva-linga below — and was given moksha at death. The vrat is jagran (night vigil) with bilva-patra abhishek on the linga.
